On December 3, 2010, Brenda Carter-Evans’ life was irreparably altered, When she was informed that her only son, Frederick “Jermaine” was dead. It wasn’t a car accident, a drug overdose or even gang related homicide. No-- Brenda Carter-Evans’ son Jermaine was found hanging from a tree with a rope around his neck. To make matters worse, the coroner immediately declared the death to be a suicide. Notwithstanding, there was essentially no investigation. In fact, more attention is routinely give to cases of animal neglect that was given to the cause of death for this young man.
His mother insists that her son would not have taken his own life. Further, there is insufficient evidence to determine conclusively that his death is a suicide. The mere fact that his body was found hanging in a deserted wooded area in North Greenwood, MS should alone warrant investigation, particularly in light of the Mississippi’s significant history of Lynchings.
Some one killed Fredrick Jermaine Carter, it is imperative that we determine who, not just for the sake of Brenda Carter-Evans but for the sake of mothers of Black men everywhere.
